  Siegel leathers are always excellent. However in the online catalog page for Restoration Morocco, the description of the leather was incomplete unless one searched further to the "Additional Information" and "Reviews" section, where I would have seen that the leather's surface supposedly was hard and did not take hand tooling. I would not have chosen this leather for doing book restoration if I had seen this before ordering, so those qualities should have been noted earlier in the description. However, by phone Siegel was immediately very helpful in arranging a return of the unwanted skin and in selecting another more suitable for my needs. Julie S., Maine

  In this day & age, it's not often that we encounter the values & integrity of days-gone-by... Especially when it comes to how retail business is conducted on line. However, Mr. Siegel is an exception. My transaction experience began with a conversation with the owner of the company, Mr. Siegel himself answered all my questions and advised me of the best options to fit my need.   I spoke with Mr. Siegel and he appeared to be very knowledgeable. I received my three goat skins quickly. They were well packaged and the price was reasonable. There were minor cosmetic flaws in the skins labeled "rejects," as described and expected. The only reason why I did not give five stars was because I had asked Mr. Siegel to include small sample swatches of red, blue, and green goat leather for future projects. Mr. Siegel may simply have forgotten to do this or there may have been another reason that I am not aware of. Should I eventually get the requested swatches, I will be happy to revise this rating and add the fifth star, which the quality of the product certainly deserves.

  Steve’s leather is truly excellent as is his service and continuing effort to create the best bookbinding leathers possible. While I don’t bind books, I use a fair amount of his leather making concertina bellows which should be expected to last over a hundred years, and unlike books that are opened perhaps a few times a day for something like a prayer book, a concertina bellows undergoes constant flexing during hours long playing sessions. I rely on Steve’s leather both for strength and the knowledge that it is devoid of the destructive byproducts of “modern” tanning methods, yet at the same time is of superb quality. It is hard to say how happy I am that he decided to focus on this area of leather production. His websit works quite well, though if I had my druthers, I’d prefer applepay, The color swatches are sometimes not all that is available, so looking at the listed colors is a good idea. I am a bit dim I expect, but the example page of the types of leather available is about kind of leather not color. Took me a little guessing to figure that out. Ordering is great, Steve ships promptly with progress updates and clear invoicing. A pleasure to deal with.

  I love both the Sokoto and River Grain for my bibles. I've had several bibles made in both of these leathers for the cover material -- usually with the liner in smooth historical goatskin. Recently, I got a bible rebound in a Sokoto cover with River Grain liner. It's my favorite bible so far! Top-notch products and top-notch service. A+++

  I’ve been buying leather from Siegel’s since the early 1970s when it was still on south street in Boston. Later I bought leather from them when they were Seidel of California. When that closed, I was worried I wouldn’t have a supply of my go to fair veg tanned goat, but wouldn’t you know it but he focused on providing vegetable tanned goat for the book binding trade which was even better than before. His custom tanned leathers are superb as well as remarkably low in price if you could compare them to the expensive stuff from England, but you can’t, because the English leather isn’t as good.

  Siegel Leather is the only leather supplier I have ever used. If there is anything better, I wouldn't know. I have no reason to cheat on Steve! Every hide I have received has been excellent quality, unless it was something I got at a bargain rate because he, himself, wasn't thrilled with it. Even then, there has been more than enough of the hide to have made the purchase well worthwhile. I live not far from his atelier, so shipping is always quick, and the packaging is careful so the leather arrives in good shape. One thing I especially appreciate is when he creates a color sample page for the different leathers. I have found that what arrives is exceptionally close to that sample. Leather is a natural product, so there are going to be variations. Those that are from Steve are really consistent. I highly recommend this company to any bookbinder who cares about consistent quality at a fair price.

  I am a small consumer, I use the leather for wallet and purse interiors because of the consistency, every side dyes and sews the same so that my products turn out much better. The description is spot on accurate and the leather ships right away. For me it is well worth the money.

  This is an excellent company. Everything I have purchased from them (over a number of years) has been top notch leather which I use in bookbinding. Their prices are reasonable for the quality they produce. They ship quickly and use excellent packing methods. I like that I can obtain leather from them that is NOT chrome processed. They have vegetable tanned leather.

  The service and the leather are superb, but the shipping costs are outrageous. I live in South Carolina and one piece of leather costs me $20.00. If this were fast shipping, that would account for some of the charge, but the shipping is slow. I do a lot of shipping and I know that it does not cost that much to ship. Thank you

  I purchased my first leather from Steve’s Dad in the early 1970s in Boston. I rediscovered him in California while trying to find a specific leather. When he moved to North Carolina and drastically cut his inventory, I felt very lucky that he chose to specialize in exactly the kind of leather ( veg tanned goat ) I needed. Not only that, but the leather he provided was much better and in many cases less expensive than what I could get elsewhere.   I am currently in the process of rebacking a small 19th c. prayer book. The lack of skiving time needed to prepare the reback is a great savings. The leather easily fits under the lifted board leather with minimal effort. Next project is replacing and relining a 19th c. desk panel.   I purchase Siegel’s leather because I like vegetable tanned leather, which, because this method of tanning can take up to two months, is more expensive than chrome tanned leather whose tanning can be completed in a day using modern machinery. The process by which chrome tanning is carried out also has a negative environmental impact, especially in developing countries. The toxic wastewater can seep into the ground and affect soil and groundwater supplies. One of the disadvantages of vegetable tanning is that it does use a lot of water but the discharge is not harmful to the environment due to the organic materials used. One of the best features of vegetable-tanned leather is that it lasts longer than chrome tanned leather and it develops a patina over time with prolonged use and exposure to the environment. It can be tooled after tanning, so it is suitable for patterning and stamping. I use it for books. Since I also use acid free papers I these books, it makes sense to me to use a product that will last a long time and look better with age. I also buy from Siege because I like working with a small business. They are honest, straight forward, and know what they are doing and selling.
