  This leather is phenomenal!! The grain pattern is lively and the color is distinct. It takes tooling extremely well. Gold foil stamping came out very clean. It is strong leather. I highly recommend it!!!

  It's a pity there's no sixth star. I received a voice-mail from someone Steven about my order, asked I return his call. A few hours later, I returned his call. It was 4:00 pm, Pacific time, 7:00 pm North Carolina time. Incredibly, my call was answered, by Steve! We addressed the matter he called about, and we discussed how the global hides market operates, Carpinteria, California, and a few other subjects. I thanked him for answering my call so late in the evening, and we ended the call. My order arrived, and it's spectacular. I have enough leather for a small library. The variety, colors/shades, and textures of the hides, will allow me to try out many new designs and ideas. I did some research on Siegel Leather. They're probably the oldest continuously-operating family-owned leather company in the United States. I also noted that Steven, was the current owner, which explained his encyclopedic knowledge of the world hides industry. Many thanks!

  I received my SHG order today. The leather is beautiful. The quality and color is excellent. My only problem now is deciding on this or the Capra Granulosa which is exquisite as well. I love the fact that the leather is ready to go with no additional edge paring necessary for my book projects.

  Since Siegel went over to the "fulfillment center" delivery system, the accuracy of the order is left wanting. I had confidence in Mr. Seigel's selection of hides beforehand as I know his first hand selections where very accurate. Now, who knows who is "fulfilling" your leather order. My recent order was missing a hide, which, when I got it after reported it missing, was a small one (#! SHG).. The original order was River Grain and a Barcelona.. All of these hides were top grade and very pleasing. Mr. Seigel hides are top of the line and very well priced. Those choosing and sending the hides, not so much. Mr. Seigel is a treasure for those of us still bookbinding. Let's hope his contracted help can get with his high quality standards.

  Being new to the leather world and this being my first order, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. After not hearing anything about my order for the first 5 days, I emailed the company. While I didn't get a response to my email, I did see that the order shipped the next day so I guessing it was seen. The order delivered pretty quickly, within five days of shipping. The tracking information for the order did t arrive until after the order delivered. All in all, I'm not disappointed with the order or the products as all of this occurred during Thanksgiving week and I'm sure people were out of the office. I would order from this site again.

  My order arrived the next day! Admittedly, I live about 2 hours away, but still! The seaweed SHG was a deeper color than my first hide. Not sure I like it as well. The first one was a light olive color, and went with a lot of my decorative papers. The deeper hue isn't quite as versatile, but it's still a nice color. All of the hides I ordered are good quality with very few trouble spots that I won't be able to use. Perfect for half and quarter bindings. Steve Siegel's leather is consistently good, fairly priced and the service is excellent.

  The Barcelona leather I received was excellent. It took my gold foil heat transfer well and is very easy to work with. I love the way the leather looks too.   Leather came in on time, neatly packaged, and from what I can tell is very good quality. Was just as described. This business also seems very transparent as there were similar leather bundles listed on their website that were cheaper, but they let the consumer know in the description that normally there is some discoloration that is supposed to have happened by that point on the leather, but those products did not have it yet, hence the cheaper price since they couldn't guarantee quality. I love that level of transparency and opted for the (slightly) more expensive leather instead. Will definitely purchase from this company again when I run out of the leather I purchased.

  I learned of Steve Siegel's leather through my teacher, who is a big fan of Steve's Rivergrain goat. I'm still an apprentice level, teetering on journeyman, and I have made it a practice to get leather from Steve because he is close by, the service is outstanding, and the leather never disappoints. I have tried Sokoto, Capra Gapranulosa, Smooth Historical Goat, Roma Goat, and Rivergrain Goat. A while back he had some SHG that didn't come out to the color he had specified. I call it "Wrong Color," but the fact is, the shade of teal matches a lot of my decorative paper, so his big sale on wrong color was my gain! I have begun using Japanese Chiyogami paper for my books, and matching leather colors can sometimes be challenging, but so far, I have managed pretty well. (Just added hot pink Rivergrain to the arsenal!) If I had any wish it would be for that Robin's Egg Blue Rivergrain. LOVED that leather! Colors aside, the leathers pare well, and they hold up to abuse by users of the books I've made for friends. I am not skilled at tooling, so cannot speak to that, but in terms of creating a simple, tightback halfbound book, Steve's choices are excellent. Professional bookbinders who haven't tried his leather are really and truly missing out! I belong to. Facebook page for binders, and I always give Steve props for my leather. I really hope a few of those people have heeded my advice and made that call! They won't regret it. The price is right, the quality is great, and the service exceptional. Plus, Steve is a mensch. What more can I say?

  Siegel leathers are always excellent. However in the online catalog page for Restoration Morocco, the description of the leather was incomplete unless one searched further to the "Additional Information" and "Reviews" section, where I would have seen that the leather's surface supposedly was hard and did not take hand tooling. I would not have chosen this leather for doing book restoration if I had seen this before ordering, so those qualities should have been noted earlier in the description. However, by phone Siegel was immediately very helpful in arranging a return of the unwanted skin and in selecting another more suitable for my needs. Julie S., Maine

  I spoke with Mr. Siegel and he appeared to be very knowledgeable. I received my three goat skins quickly. They were well packaged and the price was reasonable. There were minor cosmetic flaws in the skins labeled "rejects," as described and expected. The only reason why I did not give five stars was because I had asked Mr. Siegel to include small sample swatches of red, blue, and green goat leather for future projects. Mr. Siegel may simply have forgotten to do this or there may have been another reason that I am not aware of. Should I eventually get the requested swatches, I will be happy to revise this rating and add the fifth star, which the quality of the product certainly deserves.
